How it works

Register

First edition, in two volumes (pp. xxiii, 302; viii, 306). Small octavo (20 cm) in blue publisher's cloth, gilt titles and decoration, folding map and fifteen illustrations. A bit cocked with wear to top and bottom spine edges, tips.

"Sir James Alexander fully intended carrying out his intention of exploring part of Eastern Africa... but decided to pursue his investigations in the West. With this view he proceeded to Namaqualand and Damaraland, which countries were little known at this time. Leaving Cape Town in 1836, he traversed these regions in an ox waggon, and went through a large part of the country now known as German West Africa, arriving at Walvich Bay almost exhausted with the difficulties of travel and the want of water..." An account of the social condition of the various people of the region, the education conducted by the Dutch missions, a note on the Cape Colony (Mendelssohn).  Uncommon. Very Good.
