By the time Green wrote the Guide, he had published eight books. He suggested that the War had made many reconsider the direction of their lives and thus he wrote the Guide with the idea that some might want to get into the "writing game" because people were reading "as they have never read before" (page 7). Green provides shrewd and sound advice. He suggests that one writes about what you know, investigate before writing, deal with issues that are relevant and do research.
