Based on Chamber of Mines lectures, the highlight of this 1938 book is a series of evocative portrait studies from the camera of the renowned photographer A M Duggan-Cronin, whose Gallery was in Kimberley

Junod was a noted missionary; his anthropological and ethnographic lectures and this later book were sponsored by the Goldmine Chamber, whose workers were recruited from different regions of Southern Africa, speaking Zulu, Xhosa, Venda, Shangaan, Ndebele, Shona and other Nguni and Sotho languages

The dustjacket is complete but has some chips and edge-wear, the gilt-lettered and illustrated black cloth-boards are unrubbed and the binding is square and tight, the plain endpapers and vi/155 pp of prelims, text, appendix and index with 40 inserted b/w plates on art paper of Africans in their tribal dress are complete, very good overall, unmarked but with some light sunning to early and late leaves (but not to the plates)
