This is a beautiful, later hand-coloured copperplate print of a prospect of the early Dutch settlement at the Cape Town ("Kaapse Vlek", later Cape Town) and, below, a bird's eye view of Table bay and the "Castle".
Adjacent to the fortification is the Fresh River that took crystal clear drinking water into the bay from the foothills of Table Mountain. The prospect is well known for the transposition of Lions Head and Devil's Peak - de Fer had never visited the Cape.
The print was published by the highly regarded Nicolas de Fer in Paris in 1705.
