Attractive later colouring of this page from Henri Chatelain's moumental and famous seven-volume Atlas Historique, from the early 18th century. It has important ties with the history of travel in and to the Cape of Good Hope.

This page depicts the clothes, customs and habits of the indigenous people who live about the Cape of Good Hope. There is also a description of animals and reptiles, most copied from the journal of Simon Van der Stel's 1785 journey to the Copper Moun. The map is after the map in Guy Tachard's Voyage to Siam, published in 1788. Tachard had visited the Cape in 1685 and on his return in 1686. Somewhat recklessly, Tachard reported that the map and some of the figures in his book were supplied by Heinrich Claudius whose failure to maintain confidentiality earned him deportation, probably to Mauritius.

Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684-1743) is most well known for the Atlas Historique, published in seven volumes between 1705 and 1720 and in which this page was bound.
