Cape of Good Hope and Natal. Three sets of Parliamentary Papers bound together, all on the topic of Moshesh and the Basutos becoming British Subjects.

1. DESPATCHES from THE GOVERNOR OF THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE AND THE LIEUT.-GOVERNOR OF NATAL, ON THE SUBJECT OF THE RECOGNITION OF MOSHESH , CHIEF OF THE BASUTOS, AND OF HIS TRIBE, AS BRITISH SUBJECTS. Presented to both Houses of Parliament by Command of Her Majesty, July 1869. 134pp. Two nice folding maps

2. FURTHER DESPATCHES .............(same title). Presented to both Houses of Parliament by Command of Her Majesy, 21 February, 1870. 72pp. One nice folding map.

3. FURTHER DESPATCHES ..............(same title). Presented to both Houses of Parlament by Command of Her Majesty, May, 1870. 16pp.

The three issues are bound together in brown buckram with leather gilt titled label on the spine stating "Basutoland Papers 1869-1870".

Slight spotting to the prelims and title label a little rubbed, otherwise a very good clean copy. Ex libris of J. Jeppe on the front pastedown.

The ageing Moshesh, chief of the Basutos & founder of the Lesotho kingdom, growing tired of warfare, particularly with Free State burghers saw in British protection the means of preserving his nation. Despite suspicions of the old warriors intentions and reluctance on the part of the imperial government to extend its authority at this time, Basutoland was annexed to the Cape in 1868.
