Rick TURNER (artist).

“Devo / devo / August 2 / Armadillo” [Austin:] 1979. Offset litho, black on white poster (17 x 10 7/8in; 432 x 277mm). Provenance: the artist’s own collection. Uncirculated ‘new/old stock’.

Unsigned, but Rick has agreed to sign the poster for the successful purchaser, if they wish.

Rick comments: “This appears in Grushkin and Kings 'Art of Modern Rock' (022.6) in the first chapter on Austin roots. The Armadillo World Headquarters is now considered one of the 4 most important music venues in America at the time in terms of poster art (along with the Avalon and Fillmore in SF and the Grande in Detroit). It [this poster] also appears in Eddie Wilsons 2017 Armadillo World Headquarters (a history) but erroneously attributed to 'my brother from another Turner mother' Randy(Biscuit) Turner himself a prolific poster artist for his own band the Big Boys. I'm still seething.”

“Naturalized Texan Rick Turner arrived in Austin by way of San Antonio through Ann Arbor. Rick quickly became part of the emerging counter culture art scene in Austin, Texas. Friends with Kerry Awn, Tommy Bauman and Artly Snuff, Rick combined his art with music theatre performance as part of the Uranium Savages “security crew”, The Shrowvinovers. 1973 brought the emergence of Austintatious Comics. Between 1970 and 1980 Rick created music posters, restaurant ads, original paintings, drawings, stained glass windows for a church and album covers.” (SouthPop bio./blurb for Rick Turner’s 2012 show “Last Show Before the end of the World”)

Rick’s work is published in: "The Art of Rock"(1987);"Big Book of Austin Punk-Era Posters"(2003);"Art of Modern Rock"(2004);"Homegrown - Austin Music Posters 1967 to 1982"(2015);"Armadillo World Headquarters"(2017).

His work is included in the permanent collections of a number of prominent institutions, including: Blanton Museum of Art; South Austin Museum of Popular Culture; Briscoe Center for American History; Austin History Center; The National Archives
