'The publication of this volume was delayed owing to the author taking part in an expedition to Aden, and being subsequently engaged in the Franco-German War. It is one of the most accurate and conscientious works on South Africa published in Germany, and is particularly valuable on account of the ethnographical researches of the author at the Cape.
