4pp. c. 220 words. Autograph letter by the noted English socialist, poet, philosopher and anthologist on a single folded sheet. To a Professor Attwell and dated 23 April 1899. Thanking the recipient for the gift of a book and expressing pleasure that his writings like "Angels' Wings" have given him pleasure. He also says: "I am hopeful of the future, in the sense that I have confidence in that wh. I perceive within - within myself and others - struggling for expression: but how long some of these things will be before they find their expression I do not know! When one looks at the actualities of Civilisation - in Barnes and elsewhere - that future seems sadly distant! Well, one can only work at one's little plot of ground - leave results - I have long come to that conclusion." He then goes on to discuss some French authors who the recipient was studying. A fine letter in fine condition of a fairly uncommon autograph.

Carpenter was a close friend of Walt Whitman and Rabindrinath Tagore and corresponded with many famous people including Olive Schreiner. He was a significant influence on Schreiner, in particular via his book Towards Democracy which she read as a young woman.
