Smuts's as-always participatory foreword contrasts Andersson's and Galton's and Livingstone's, his contemporaries', concern with people and places with the obsession of more popular explorer-writers of the time with their game or hunting exploits.
In his preface, the author, J P R Wallis, well known as an academic editor in the mid-1900s, relates how the book came to be written, with Dr J G Gubbins its "onlie begetter" and Andersson's diaries and letters its main material.
Blue cloth-boards, gilt to spine, top edge tinted blue, bottom edge uncut, map of Damaraland (based on C J Andersson's own maps) on both endpapers, portrait frontispiece from a sculpture of Andersson by Joyce Wallis, 412 pp of text, epilogue and index + 7 inserted b/w plates (three reproduced from originals by Thomas Baines).
CONDITION. The boards remain in very good condition apart from a rubbed spot at the foot of the (sunned) spine. Andrew Fleming's bookplate is on the front paste-down. There is a spine crack at the frontispiece. The contents, including the plates, are all very good, unmarked and undiscoloured.
