John LAURENCE (1668-1732) or 'Charles EVELYN'.

The Clergyman's Recreation Shewing the Pleasure and Profit of the Art of Gardening ... By John Lawrence [sic.]. London: printed for Bernard Lintott, 1717. Engraved emblematic frontispiece. FIFTH EDITION. Henrey III, 937

[bound with:] The Gentleman's Recreation: or the Second Part of the Art of Gardening Improved ... By John Laurence. London: printed for Bernard Lintott, 1717. Engraved emblematic frontispiece, 3 folding engraved plates, this copy bound without the fourth plate as is sometimes the case [see Henrey]. (Some creasing to plates.) SECOND EDITION. Henrey III, 943

[bound with:] The Lady's Recreation: or the Third and Last Part of the Art of Gardening Improv'd ... By Charles Evelyn. London: printed for J. Roberts, 1717. Emblematic frontispiece. FIRST EDITION. Henrey III, 699

3 works in one volume, octavo.

Condition of contents: possibly lacking a general title at the front of the first work, some spotting, otherwise excellent.

Contemporary paneled calf, covers tooled in blind

Condition of binding: corners rubbed and bumped, spine label lacking, spine rubbed and slightly chipped, joints split, inner hinges strengthened (see images).

Provenance: 19th-century armorial bookplate (see mages).

Despite the claims of the third work that it was the 'third and last part' part of Laurence's '...Art of Gardening', it appears that it was produced without any reference to Laurence, who disowned it in his 'The Fruit-Garden Kalendar' (London; 1718).

The present combination of works was also sold with an additional general title page 'Gardening improv'd' (London: printed and sold by W. Taylor, 1718), but there is no sign that this was ever part of the present 'sammelband'.
