Theal (1837-1919) was born in New Brunswick, Canada and disembarked in Cape Town whilst en route to Australia in 1861 (although he went to England, Europe and Canada in later years, he never made it to Australia!). He became an historian via journalism, which he began practising whilst in King William's Town. He later taught and worked at the press in Lovedale. In his work he drew initially on oral material and later on archival sources located in magisterial and government offices. He was given the honorary title of Colonial Historiographer in 1891 and worked on various histories until 10 minutes before his death (according to his friend, George Cory). See Christopher Saunders, THE MAKING OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN PAST.
