The author writes, 'As much ... as one would wish, in dealing with Kekewich's gallant and remarkable defence of the Diamond Fields, to remain silent on the subject of the many things done by Rhodes which brought him into collision with the military commander of the besieged town, and gave rise to the friction alluded to' ... that he has decided, ‘with considerable reluctance’, to give a description of the events from Kekewich’s perspective which gave rise to this friction, and, in the author’s opinion, placed Kekewich unfairly in an unfavourable light. The author felt that, as the chief intelligence officer under Kekewich, he was ideally placed to describe events behind the scenes, of which he had first hand knowledge, which led to this friction. (From the introduction).
The signature is on the reverse of the frontispiece. It seems like the signature of Sir Trehawke Herbert Kekewich, 1st Baronet (11 July 1851 – 10 March 1932). He was the brother of Major-General Robert Kekewich. Dated 3 Feb 1926. Robert Kekewich died 5 November 1914.
