Editor's Note: Nicolas Barker was head of Conservation at the British Library and is editor of the Book Collector. He has drawn on his extensive knowledge of the family history to provide an account of Lady Anne's sojourn, and also the subject of her drawings. The whole provides a vivid and enthralling picture of life at the Cape two centuries ago.
