The first edition (in Dutch) of this fairly scarce and interesting title which precedes (by 23 years) the first edition in English, published posthumously by Schreiner's husband, Cronwright-Schreiner, in 1923 (Thoughts on South Africa). Olive Schreiner worked for many years on her major opus on South Africa, but never got to publishing it herself in her lifetime. Some exerpts were published in various periodicals. It is interesting to speculate where the English manuscript used for this book was, as the title page states - "Naar het Engelsch door J.A. BIENTJIES".
134pp. Small 8vo. In the original beige cloth with gilt lettering and a map of Africa imprinted in black on the front cover. A 4x1.5cm. piece has been removed from the top of blank front free endpaper. Missing the frontispiece portrait of Schreiner. Slight wear of the cloth at the extremes of the spine, but otherwise a clean unmarked and unfoxed copy.
