The ink binder's stamp "Bemrose, Derby" is at the top corner of the front paste down.

Later brown leather and book cloth binding with gilt titling and decorations on the spine. New light green end papers. Black and white fold out frontispiece of the Victoria Falls. x prelims including the list of illustrations, portrait of Livingstone, 687 pages of text, a total of 47 illustrations including the two folding maps at the rear - the Map of Dr. Livingstone's Route is housed in a pocket on the inside of the lower board.

This variant of the first edition only has black and white illustrations. The publisher's advertisements often found at the rear are not present.

CONDITION DETAILS: The lower board has come loose from the book block and the upper board's hinge is cracked. The binding is attractive and well worth repairing.The contents of the book are still clean and fresh.
