Dubbed "no ordinary woman" by Jan Smuts, Florence Phillips was influential amongst the leading figures of her time. Born in Cape Town in 1863, she moved between Cape Town and the Kimberley diamond fields, where she met and married Lionel Phillips in 1885.  After the Jameson Raid and the South African War, the Phillips resettled in Johannesburg, where Florence motivated the setting up of the Johannesburg Art Gallery and commissioned Marloth to start work on THE FLORA OF SOUTH AFRICA. After they purchased the farm Vergelegen from fellow diamond prospector Samuel Kerr, she initiated its restoration, encouraging the preservation of national heritage through preserving local culture, crafts, and artifacts.
