How it works

Register

When this title came out, in 1928, Louisa Bolus was honorary curator of the University of Cape Town's Bolus Herbarium, and this Part I was the start of a project to produce a full monograph on this "pre-eminently South African group of plants", on which work had begun at the Herbarium more than twenty years previously. (We have not been able to trace the full monograph.)

Tan buckram-boards with a blind-embossed flower emblem and gilt-embossed lettering to the upper board (no lettering on spine), rounded binding, head- and tail-bands, plain endpapers, 156 pp of text and index with 21 colour plates and numerous b/w illustrations in the text, which is all on art-paper.

CONDITION. The boards appear unevenly sunned in some light, but remain unbumped or otherwise undamaged. The free endpapers are sunned. There is a pencil signature of a 1979 owner on the front paste-down and, tipped-on to the front free endpaper, there is an ink inscription "With L Bolus' compliments." The contents, including all the plates, are complete, unmarked and undiscoloured. The Very Good description is conservative and would have been Fine without the two sunned pages.

A possibly unique copy with the author's inscription.
