17 sepia toned photographs chiefly of buildings in Johannesburg and several of the mines in surrounding areas, mounted on the recto leaves of an album of 28 leaves. They are all undated, most have handwritten captions beneath them. The album is bound half brown leather with matching pebble grained cloth boards and a scuffed handwritten label on the upper cover, the spine is frayed and worn at the top and the bottom. The photographs are in good condition and probably cover the period of the late 1880's – to early 1900.

Contents include:

Ferreira Gold Mine – 2 photograph undated. The mine started in October 1886
Robinson Gold Mine – commenced 1887
Prichard Street
Market square – 3 different views
Rand Club – founded in October 1887
Commissioner Street -2 views – 1 with horse drawn trams – earliest recorded 1891
Rissik Street
Stock Exchange

There are 10 photographs of nature : 2 with captions - 1 of Strubens Willows and one of Struben's Waterfall.

Also included are 6 images of the Boer War – only 1 is dated 1899.

The final image has the caption Welcome to Chamberlain. Government Gardens Cape Town – Chamberlain visited South Africa between December 1902 and February 1903.
