This book intended to mark "the opening of a new chapter in in the history of South Africa . . . with a valedictory review of some of the less-known events and conditions of the Old Regime before they have become indistinct and hazy, and possibly perverted in the re-telling".

Its chapters cover the early secret service in the Cape Colony, secret service pioneers, the illicit liquor trade and both illicit gold and illicit diamond buying, gun-running and the Boer secret service under Dr Leyds.

Green cloth-boards, gilt titles to the spine. The binding is tight. The top edge is gilt. Unfoxed and unmarked.
