South Africa: The Cordoned Heart is jointly produced by the Center for Documentary Photography at Duke University and the Center for Documentary Photography at the University of Cape Town.

The photographs are selected from essays submitted in 1984 to the Second Carnegie inquiry into Poverty and Development in South Africa. The enquiry was established by Carnegie Corporation of New York in 1982 at the University of Cape Town. Its aim is to document the conditions of poverty in South Africa and surrounding states, to analyze the causes and consequences of poverty, and to devise strategies to deal with poverty and injustice in the region.

The photographers and producers of this portfolio are donating half the proceeds from its sale to help support the activities of the newly formed Center for Documentary Photography at the University of Cape Town.

This portfolio produced in conjunction with a book, South Africa: The Cordoned Heart, published in the United States by W.W. Norton & Company, New York, 1986, in association with the Center for Documentary Photography at Duke University; and travelling exhibitions in South Africa, Great Britain, Germany and the United States. Exhibitions toured by the Second Carnegie Inquiry in Poverty and Development in Southern Africa, Christian Aid, OXFAM, The Photographer’s Gallery in London and the International Center of Photography in New York.

The Portfolio includes ten, signed, black and white photographs, archivally processed and printed in South Africa in the fall of 1985. The prints are matted with four-ply 100% rag museum board and packaged in a specially designed case.

This is a limited edition of fourteen, of which this is number 12
