A very good copy in orange cloth, the dust jacket has wear on spine and top and bottom has repairs.

100 pages of text, 15 tipped-in colour plates, 3 x tipped in black and white photographs plus 14 pages of photographs and 47 plates of illustration.

Walter Battiss was born in the Cape and grew up in Koffiefontein, an area rich in works of early man. His interest fueled by his visits to the prehistoric galleries of France and Spain.

On his return he worked as a teacher and in his holidays he visited painted and did engravings at sites in South Africa and Rhodesia, he used his background as artist and draughtsman which gave him insight and understanding of the primitive.
