This copy of the 7th impression of the first edition of Austin Roberts's renowned bird book - with its short but typically brilliant foreword by (Field-Marshal) J C Smuts - is included because (1) it includes the author's first revision, (2) it was lovingly but carefully used in the field over a period of some sixty years by the members of a single Rhodesian family, and (3) it remains unmarked and complete and has been carefully repaired to its present overall condition of Good+.
Blue cloth-boards, gilt lettering to the spine and gilt millimetre and inch rule to the lower board, all page-edges tinted blue, plain endpapers, colour painting on frontispiece, xxxvi + 463 pp of text and 4 indexes on wove paper + 56 inserted plates of Lighton's famous colour paintings on gloss-art paper.
CONDITION. The spine has been strengthened with archival tape and the boards are now protected in clear-plastic film. There are two largish chips in the upper board and the corners are lightly bumped. The endpapers are unmarked (though with a Que Que bookseller ticket at the front) and the first three and last three text leaves are lightly foxed. The contents remain clean, bright and undiscoloured.
