London: T. C. & E. C. Jack, 1912. Association copy. First edition, from the library of Oscar Asche (pp. 459, index). Quarto (24 cm) in dark blue publisher’s cloth, gilt titles and decoration, t.e.g.;  twenty-five b & w plates illustrate excerpts from the accounts of early travellers, wanderers, soldiers, settlers. An otherwise ordinary copy save that this is from the library of the noted actor and theatrical producer, Oscar Asche, who with his company embarked in August of 1913 on a tour of South African cities— for details and Asche’s impressions of the country see  chapter 11 of his autobiographical notes. Asche & Co. departed Cape Town for England on Boxing Day, 1913. (An admittedly casual search failed to locate “Tim” whose gift this was, but it likely is a keepsake from a South African admirer). Very Good.
