The first edition of this title in the original pink/red cloth with blind embossed decoration on the boards and spine with gilt lettering on the spine. 8vo. 319pp. With the coloured frontispiece of the Chief Macomo. Some irregular sunning of the front board and the spine and the rear endpaper is just starting to split at the joint but is still holding firmly. Internally the book is very clean and unmarked with no foxing whatsoever. Altogether a very good copy. SABIB Vol.1, Page 571.

Mendelssohn: "Shipwreck, and subsequent socialising at the Cape, prevented the author from reaching his original destination of New Zealand. Cole travelled extensively through South Africa and provides interesting observations on the social life of Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown. Cole's impression of the Boers is a favourable one and is sympathetic to their grievances. While Cole avers on the slavery question, he is a strident critic of the government, in particular of Sir Harry Smith."
