Whilst on leave from India in 1832-1833, D'Oyly lived in Cape Town. A fine draughtsman, he painted from life and in the field. He loved the landscape and had an observant eye for people and their daily activities. He left an album of 118 sketches of the Cape Peninsula and environs. His landscapes record the countryside of the Boland and his sketches of people form an interesting social record of the time.
