Volume I - Spine band a tad soft at head and tail with a 2cm slit at the top front hinge, blind stamped decoration to front and back panels, front endpaper hinge fractured at top and bottom for about 5cm each, binding shaken, owner's neat inscription to front endpaper dated 1848 with a second name underneath, colour frontispiece of Golden Eagle, pages xxiv + 379: all indexed illustrations are present. Colour illustrations with paperguard, underlying webbing and binding is sound.
Volume II - Spine band is split for approx 7cm from the top along the back spine hinge, blind stamped decoration to front and back panels, the paperblock has separated from the casing, owner's neat inscription to front end paper dated 1848 with a second name underneath. Colour frontispiece of The Gannet.
Pages 389: there is no index to volume II to verify completeness of illustrations, however all seems to be sound with no indication of missing plates. Colour illustrations with paperguard.
