Editor's note. 'This outstanding work is the result of eleven years of the most careful study of this important genus in the field, herbarium and garden. The author travelled 40,000 miles and collected 2000 sets of specimens over 600 of which he had under cultivation. The volume which consists of 355 pages with10 plates and 73 text figures drawn by the author, contains a full account of over 200 species with citations of material and localities. In addition there are notes on previous work, the principal collectors, heterophylly, heterostyly and pollination, hybridisation, teratology, epharmonic variation, seeds and germination, methods of collecting and preserving, a key to the species, indices, etc.'

Captain Salter paid for the publication himself and according to R.H. Compton, the first editor of the Journal of South African Botany, the edition was limited to only 200 copies.
