Having served as a volunteer doctor in the Langman Field Hospital

in Bloemfontein in early 1900, Conan Doyle wrote a pamphlet titled

The War in South Africa: Its Cause and Conduct, and also this present

volume (dedicated to Langman). He is quoted as believing that this

resulted in his knighthood awarded in 1902. It is also significant in

being his first work of non-fiction, a branch of his writing that came

to be dominated by his later interest in spiritualism.
