The editor, whose version was published over a three-year period, writes that Gibbon remains one of the few great literary historians. Bury's set follows the design of the original, with the addition of his expert commentary, profuse notes and a revised index.

Maroon cloth-boards, gilt to spine, plain endpapers, top page-edge gilt, other edges uncut, some leaves unopened. The maps are folding and usually on tissue paper. There are lists of errata and addenda for previous volumes.

  • Vol I. 1897. Map + lxx + 464 pp of text, notes, appendix and index + 40 pp of publisher's announcements.
  • Vol II. 1897. 3 maps + xviii + 510 pp of text, notes, appendix and index, + 40 pp of publisher's announcements.
  • Vol III. 1897. map + xvii + 508 pp of text, notes, appendix and index + 40 pp of publisher's announcements.
  • Vol IV. 1898. xv + 546 pp of text, notes, appendix and index + 44 pp of publisher's announcements.
  • Vol V. 1898. map + xviii + 543 pp of text, notes, appendix and index + 40 pp of publisher's announcements.
  • Vol VI. 1898. xvii + 560 pp of text, notes, appendix and index + 45 pp of publisher's announcements.
  • Vol VII. 1900. xii + 508 pp of text, notes, appendix and index + 40 pp of publisher's announcements.

CONDITION. This is a rare very good complete set of the first edition of Bury's revised edition of Gibbon's classic history, which was originally published between 1776 and 1782. The boards of this new (1897-1900) edition are lightly rubbed, with a minimum of spine sunning. The top-page gilding has dulled. The other page-edges are sunned. The University of Johannesburg Latin and Greek professor W J Henderson's ownership signature and date is on the front free endpapers of all the volumes, which are otherwise unmarked. Despite the sunned page-edges, there is no foxing of the pages themselves.
