First American edition, published in the same year as the English Hurst and Blackett first edition.

8vo; original burgundy cloth, with spine lettering piece in gilt, and gilt rhinoceros to upper board, gilt hippopotamus to lower board; re-cased, with new endpapers; pp. 414 + publisher's adverts.; plates; folding colour map (apparently not included in the Hurst & Blackett edition). Boards a bit rubbed, and corners lightly bumped; scattered, moderate foxing. Good to very good condition.

(Hosken, p. 5; Mendelssohn I, p. 42; Tenri Africana 2596 [all the Hurst & Blackett edition]; Czech, p. 7; SABIB 1, p. 66) SABIB quotes this note to the American edition: "The English edition of the Okavango River contains no Map or Table of Distances. The American Publishers have endeavoured to supply this deficiency by inserting the accompanying map, originally prepared for Livingstone's Travels". "A description of a hunting expedition through Namaqualand and Damaraland. Andersson intended to explore these countries right up to the Cunene or Nourse River, but the difficulties of the expedition, though encountered with indomitable courage, proved to be insuperable, and he had to turn back. He obtained, however, much valuable information, and his success as a hunter and collector was unique in this part of the continent. The coast-line of South-West Africa is carefully described, and there is an interesting account of the once-famed guano island, Ichaboe." - Mendelssohn
