First edition: 207 pages, frontispiece of the Royal Family, lavishly illustrated with black and white photographs, colour illustrations and black and white drawings, starting to wear at the hinges, green cloth with pictorial gilt on the upper cover which is fading, the boards are worn, a good copy.

Mendelssohn (Sidney) South African Bibliography volume 1 page 968 - 969: Possibly the best of the American publications respecting the South African War. The volume is printed in large type, with generous margins, and contains 18 full-page illustrations in colour, and 34 full-page illustrations in black and white, in addition to numerous engravings in the text.

Sir John Bourinot: remarks, "It was clear to the world that the Boer Government had determined on war as the only possible solution of the irrepressible conflict between it and England."

Plate 14 (facing page 144) is titled 'General French's Irregulars Harassing the Boers after the Relief of Kimberley'. The illustrator was Frederic Remington, celebrated artist of the American West.
