Two volume set.

Leather bindings with marbled paper covered boards, gilt decorations on the spines and red title labels. Later brown coloured end papers.

Volume one has an engraved frontis portrait of the author, engraved vignette title page, viii prelims, 341 pages and a large folding map at the rear.

Volume two has a coloured lithographic frontispiece with a tissue guard, engraved vignette title page, vi prelims and 347 pages.

CONDITION DETAILS: When this set was re-bound the publisher's advertisements were not replaced, otherwise complete. Both front paste downs have marks indicating the removal of book plates. The frontispiece and title page of volume one are loose. The large folding map at the rear has a short tear and it has a few brown marks - see close-up images. The upper board of volume two is bowed.
