The Great Trek was a pivotal moment in South African history where the Boer frontier farmers collectively decided to trek into the unknown interior of southern Africa in order to free themselves of high-handed British colonial rule.
In popular culture the word "trek" in Star Trek can etymologically be traced back to these northwards migrations of the Dutch settlers in South Africa. The word is used to describe an arduous, long-distance journey across difficult terrain and was adopted in the English language in the 19th century.
