581 pages, frontispiece portrait of the Governor of Natal 1901-1907, Colonel Sir Henry McCallum, 8 plates, 11 maps - 1 folding at the end, maroon cloth titled gilt on the spine, few marks throughout but a clean copy, top edge gilt.

A few discolouration marks to cover. On close inspection, a few pages (approximately 10) had small soft-pencil marginalia which have been erased. One page has neat pen underlining and notes (see photo).

Two book plates and one previous owner's name handwritten.

The author was a Captain in the Natal Field Artillery and an Intelligence Officer from 1906 to 1909
