Covers early travels in South Africa with sketches of Native races including their wars and history.

Leyland made three expeditions into the far interior of South Africa between 1848 and 1852.  He traded with the natives tribes while hunting Big Game on his way to Lake Ngami and Bechuanaland.  Leyland mentions his encounter with Dr. Livingston in 1850.
