Baron Bror Fredrik von Blixen-Finecke (25 July 1886-4 March 1946)
was a Swedish baron, writer, and African big-game hunter. Blixen formed
Tanganyika Guides Ltd, for professional hunting, in partnership with
Philip Percival and Jeff Manley. Blixen and Percival became East Africa's
leading hunters. According to Ulf Aschan, Safaris lasted from one month
to three. A meticulous organizer, Blixen never left anything to chance.
Fly camps, fuel depots, airstrips, provisions, and staff were always laid out
well in advance. He would also take time to reconnoitre an area thoroughly
beforehand to check on waterholes and general game movements.
"The author recounts his hunting experiences over several decades, ranging
from buffalo in the Lake Tana region to elephant near Avakubi in the Belgian
Congo and also in Uganda. He guided the Prince of Wales on two hunts, and
bagged a wide variety of game, including lion, rhinoceros, and other plains game.
In one instance, he saved American millionaire Alfred Vanderbilt from a charging
rhino. Blixen-Finecke achieved a measure of fame as the husband of Isak Dinsen.
