Jan Eloff (1859-1939) was the second Mining Commissioner of early Witwatersrand 1886-1892. Born at Waterkloof near Rustenburg he started his career as a trader, fought at Majuba during the First Anglo-Boer War and joined the civil service in Pretoria. In his capacity as Mining Commissioner he was intimately involved with the origin and growth of Johannesburg and the early development of the Witwatersrand Gold Fields. His grandfather was President Paul Kruger.

Judge Carl Jeppe (1858-1933) was the brother of Witwatersrand mining magnate Julius Jeppe. He arrived in the Transvaal in 1871 and in 1876 took part in the war against Sekhukhune as an adjudant under the command of Col. I.P. Ferreira. He joined the Transvaal civil service in 1877 and was public prosecutor in the Waterberg, where he regularly also had to regularly act as magistrate. In 1886 he was member of the Diggers' Committee and in 1888 he was chairman of the First Chamber of Mines. President Kruger appointed him a member of the conciliation committee after the Jameson Raid and in the years following the Second Anglo-Boer War he was judge of the Water Court.
