First Edition: 303 pages, frontispiece portrait, decorated red cloth lightly soiled, some spotting on the edges and foxing on the preliminary pages, a very good copy.

Hales was the special correspondent for the Daily News. His dispatches are grouped together under the headings, 'With the Australians': he says the Australians adopted Boer tactics with great success, 'Among the Boers', he was wounded and captured near Rensburg and gives an account of his captivity and good treatment by the Boers, 'With General Rundle' in which he deals with the movements which resulted in General Prinsloo's surrender, 'Character Sketches in Camp' and a final section of articles on various aspects of the war including the battle of Magersfontein. In all an interesting journalistic account of the war.
