Vandeleur, was an officer in the Scots Guards, and who participated in the Unyoro Expedition in 1895, the Niger Expedition in 1897, and served with the Egyptian Army in the Soudan expedition of 1898. He was killed in 1901 when a fusillade of gunfire was fired on his train by the Boers.
