In 1806 Jacobus Hendriksen applied to the new British administration for permission to build a bakery on land close to the sea shore and the castle to supply bread to the populace. It is unclear if he completed the construction, but he did have a storeroom on the land. Between 1811 and 1814 the building was refurbished by Governor Sir John Cradock and it briefly became the Customs House. When found unsuitable, it reverted to being a granary. In due course it housed a prison for women, a post office, a police station, the Civil Engineers Office and then the Office of Inspector of Public Works. By the 1970s it had fallen into disrepair and by 2012 posed a safety hazard. Repaired in a sympathetic and careful manner by the City, it now houses the Desmond and Leah Tutu Foundation, which is intent on "making visible the compassion and dignity needed by our country". Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu (p.12).
