96 pages. Small, oblong book covered in pliant brown suede with front cover design blocked in gilt. Patterned endpapers, the first of which has a name inscription so faint as to be illegible. The title page, printed in red and black, has a second name inscription (J. M. Lyle) and the dedication page, a third (Eugene Louw). All 96 pages are printed with red borders; and the English verses with their matching Afrikaans translations are on facing pages.

Langenhoven had always been an admirer of Edward FitzGerald's adaptation of Omar Khayyám's Rubáiyát, an enduring collection of poems that had achieved general popularity since its first publication in Britain in 1859.

It is said that Langenhoven translated all 75 quatrains of FitzGerald's original translation (the first of four separate versions) on Christmas Day 1923. Nasionale Pers published the Afrikaans Rubáiyát in March 1924 as the first of a series of lounge booklets
