"The author was a Welsh mining engineer who travelled extensively

in Central Africa. He traversed through the Bahr-el-Ghazal region,

then almost unknown, exploring the Jur, Yalo and other affluents

of the Ghazel and in 1858 he penetrated the Niam-Niam country.

His addition to the known knowledge of natural history was considerable,

being responsible for the discovery of new species. He describes visiting

ancient Egyptian sites, reports on local traditions, dress and sports, as

well as several hunting trips."

A desirable copy of this lovely first edition.

"Petherick, a contemporary of Samuel Baker, Richard Burton,

and John Hanning Speke, traveled along the Nile Valley,

through Kordofan and into the unknown region beyond.

While primarily a narrative of travel and exploration, there

are incidents of hunting gazelle, buffalo, and rhinoceros, with

a description of a native hunt for elephants. Reasonably well

written, Petherick's works never enjoyed the popularity of a

Baker, Burton, or Speke, [Czech, An Annotated Bibliography

of African Big Game Hunting Books, 1785 to 1950, p.129]."
