'The author Frank Reid was “of the 9th (Sportsmen) S.A.I., 10th Composite Regiment, and 8th S.A. I.“ [South African Infantry]. The book is elsewhere said to be based on letters he had written to his mother whilst on active service.
'Frank Reid, born 1885 in Cape Town, Cape Colony, was the recipient of one of the two scholarships funded by Ceil Rhodes while the latter was still alive, the first Rhodes Scholarships. Frank Reid studied law at Oriel College Oxford from c 1902-1907. He began practicing law in South Africa in 1908 and went on to become a leading South African barrister and King's Counsel, and a well-known sporting personality. He died in 1963.'
