This birthday greetings card is an ephemeral item, an item of which the value was never intended, or could never have been foreseen, to outlast its immediate purpose. Haldeman's chiropractic patients, after receiving their birthday greetings card in the mail, would have appreciated the gesture, but I reckon few, if any, would have bothered to hold onto it as a keepsake, with the result that most, or perhaps all, were discarded. And yet, after more than six decades, one of these cards has survived and in that time it has become culturally significant for one very specific reason, and Dr. Joshua Haldeman would never have foreseen or believed that the grandson he was bouncing on his knee one afternoon at 259 Soutpansberg Road would one day become the richest man on the planet!
