The complete history of the dreaded Confederate warship and its famous captain, Admiral Semmes. During the American Civil War Confederate cruisers sailed around the world with a single goal, to sink as many Union Ships or "Northern" merchant ships as possible. The CSS Alabama excelled in this undertaking, sinking 68 merchant ships and retiring their unfortunate crews to the cold sea's embrace in its first two years of service. This Confederate Cruiser twice called at Table Bay, Cape Town, in the years 1863 and 1864, and the arrival of the famous warship appears to have been a big event in its day as it inspired the Afrikaans folk song "Daar kom die Alibama" (Here comes the Alabama from across the seas). Even Thomas Bowler seized on the opportunity to paint the American warship as it was leaving Table Bay.
