This book describes an archaeological investigation into the ruins and terraces in the Inyanga district, the aim being to discover the age and purposes of the terraces and the identity of their builders.

After reading our conclusions, some people may be inclined to wonder why the work is described as " archaeological" when most of our work deals with events which occurred but a few centuries ago. However in a country like Southern Rhodesia, whose written history started less than a century ago, it is necessary to use archaeological methods to determine objectively what happened before written records were kept. These methods, first used to investigate the civilizations of the ancient world , are equally useful in studying other cultures, of which written records are either absent or scanty, and it is now a commonplace among archaeologists that their discipline is independent of absolute time. Our organization at Inyanga was far less elaborate than those used in discovering details of very ancient Near-Eastern cities, of British burial mounds or Roman fortresses, but our methods were fundamentally the same.

Our work at Inyanga was done with the assistance of a private Fund established for this purpose.
