Cape Town: Saul Solomon, 1865
8vo, 272pp. Hardcover binding. Early Cape Town publication.
Signed by the author.
Rev. Johannes Beijer (1822 – 1876) was, after Rev. Dirk Postma, the second minister to serve in the Reformed Church. From Leeuwarden he departed on 18 May 1861 (according to another source in July) with his four young children on De Zaanstroom for Reddersburg in South Africa. In March 1869 Rev. Beijer and his family left South Africa for the Netherlands on eight months' leave due to his wife's poor health. He published 3 books while in South Africa. Prof. B. Spoelstra writes: "These publications were especially intended to offer an apology in the Netherlands for the establishment of the Reformed Church in South Africa during 1859 and thus fill a gap that Postma's explanations did not cover." Saul Solomon (1817 – 1892) was a Cape statesman, printer and publisher. He was born on the island of St. Helena in 1817. He came to the Cape Colony as a child, studied at the South African College where he was one of the most brilliant students and became an apprentice in the printing trade. In 1840 he founded the firm of Saul Solomon & Co. which soon became the Government Printer. (wikipedia.com)
