Born into a military family in Woolich in 1876, Colonel Godley arrived in South Africa in 1896. He saw service with the BSAP in Rhodesia, and then in the South African War (1899-1902) before serving as a policeman in the Transvaal and Natal. He provides a fascinating first hand account of his life with accounts of the war and the 1913 miner's strike, the Rebellion and the Rand Rebellion.
