Greenwall (Ryno) Artists and Illustrators of the Ango-Boer War pages 82 - 83, '..their most famous cartoonist, 'Caran d'Ache'. Russian-born Emmanuel Poire adopted the pseudonym, which is a transliteration of the Russian word for 'lead pencil'. He had a long and distinguished career with Le Rire as well as working for many other contemporary publications, particularly Le Figaro. The entire issue of Le Rire for 17 November 1900 entitled 'Kruger le Grand et John Bull le Petit' was devoted to his work.'
